Health effects and economic cost of bushfire smoke

The project aims to comprehensively assess the health burden and economic costs of bushfire smoke across Australia. It will accurately quantify the health-related expenses and economic losses caused by exposure to bushfire smoke, while identifying the populations and regions most vulnerable to its effects. By filling this critical knowledge gap in understanding the overall costs of bushfire smoke, which have worsened due to climate change-driven bushfires, the research offers multiple benefits. These findings can inform policy decisions, improve resource allocation in healthcare, support preventive measures, and raise public awareness of the economic and social impacts of bushfires. Beyond academic contributions, the results can be shared through public awareness campaigns and collaborations with government agencies. Additionally, user-friendly tools and resources can be developed to promote understanding and support the translation of research into actionable policies for policymakers, healthcare professionals, and the wider community.
